Teaching and Learning - Technology

The way in which students learn in the modern society has changed due to the ubiquity of social media and mobile devices, not to mention the convenience of Internet connection, therefore digital learning is an important part of today's teaching.  At Dawson Park, we are preparing students to participate and communicate effectively and responsibly in a digital society and economy through positive and confident engagement with digital technology.

The Technologies Curriculum is explicitly taught once a week for an hour to students from Pre-Primary to year 6 and focuses on two areas of learning: Design and Technologies and Digital Technologies.   Our program gives students the opportunity to think critically and creatively, solve problems and test solutions, explore and discover new ways of doing things whilst working independently and collaboratively in teams.  Students continually practice online safety and awareness skills in order to respect and protect themselves and others whilst collaborating online.

Digital Technologies teaches our students all about Digital Systems, Data and Information and Creating Digital Solutions. Whilst in Design and Technologies students actively engage in creating solutions to real world problems by applying the design process.

The technologies program offers student the opportunity to become literate in the use of iPads and laptops for a purpose.  Students also have access to some of the latest robotics equipment, including Beebot, LittleBits, Sphero, Makey Makey, EV3LEGO Mindstorm Dash & Dots, Edisons.

Dawson Park PS competed in the 2019 First Lego League competition for the first time.  This amazing experience provided a select group of students (Year4-6) with the opportunity to build, program and compete with a robot (namely EV3 LEGO Mindstorm) whilst also exploring, collaborating and communicating their solutions to a modern real world problem.  Participation in future First Lego League competitions will be on offer as an extra curricular STEM activity. Students in Year4-6 can nominate themselves to join the team of T-Experts, this is a great leadership opportunity and equips students with the skills to troubleshoot and problem solve with technology. As a T-Expert students are trained to assist their peers, and even their teachers, to solve IT problems and learn new apps.
